Hamilton Louden Bruce decided to try his hand at furniture manufacturing in October 1943. Leasing a small building for fifteen dollars a month, he hired two helpers and started to manufacture canvas covered lawn chairs, producing only about 24 chairs a day. Mr. Bruce named the company Hammary, after himself, Hamilton (Ham) and his wife Mary (mary). In 1947, Mr. Bruce dropped the lawn chair line and began to manufacture a group of occasional tables, able to sell $200,000 in orders before even the first sample tables were made at the plant!

This homespun occasional group is a composition of gentle styling and versatile arrangement, offered in an unrefined medium brown finish. Each table's unique bottom shelf layout makes this a truly exclusive table group. The casual rustic styling that is portrayed make it perfect for the moderately traditional to transitional home. These tables have sturdy KD construction, built from select hardwoods and poplar veneers. The planked, v-grooved tops are accentuated by square pegs exposed in the corners, and supported by four heavy legs that have exposed pegs along the top as well. The quaint bottom shelves, having a pierced design, function as open storage. The exposed pegs, planked tops, and rustic finish give this group a somewhat bungalow element that heightens the casual feel. The group consists of four pieces: rectangular lift-top cocktail table on casters, an end table with a drawer, a chairside table with a drawer, and a sofa table that doubles as an entertainment console. The practical sofa table has two drawers, openings for media components, bottom shelf for open storage, and all are sized to fit today's audio and home theater systems.
