Hamilton Louden Bruce decided to try his hand at furniture manufacturing in October 1943. Leasing a small building for fifteen dollars a month, he hired two helpers and started to manufacture canvas covered lawn chairs, producing only about 24 chairs a day. Mr. Bruce named the company Hammary, after himself, Hamilton (Ham) and his wife Mary (mary). In 1947, Mr. Bruce dropped the lawn chair line and began to manufacture a group of occasional tables, able to sell $200,000 in orders before even the first sample tables were made at the plant!

In keeping with current design trends, the Astor living room table collection embraces the merger of natural wood stains with clean lines. This approach provides an excellent foundation for adding unique style elements to the piece. In the case of the Astor End Table, a starburst motif is featured on the top and sets the table apart. The starburst design is made using hand-laid thick veneers in three contrasting wood species Oak, Pine, and Walnut. This is then inset with a simple mitered frame for a tray effect. The Astor End Table also includes a lower shelf that adds extra display storage, visual balance, and structural strength.
