Hamilton Louden Bruce decided to try his hand at furniture manufacturing in October 1943. Leasing a small building for fifteen dollars a month, he hired two helpers and started to manufacture canvas covered lawn chairs, producing only about 24 chairs a day. Mr. Bruce named the company Hammary, after himself, Hamilton (Ham) and his wife Mary (mary). In 1947, Mr. Bruce dropped the lawn chair line and began to manufacture a group of occasional tables, able to sell $200,000 in orders before even the first sample tables were made at the plant!

The Rectangular Chairside Chest (207-917) elevates the side table concept further: one drawer for everyday items, one door revealing cane-woven panels that add visual interest, an adjustable wood shelf for flexibility, and a flip-down rear panel concealing an electrical outlet perfect for a table lamp or phone charger. All three pieces are crafted from alder veneers in a warm Hazel finish that deepens the collection's natural, organic character.
